Techniques of the old masters have guided my work for years

Artwork by Charles Daniels

I am a retired physicist. However, I have been drawing and painting since I was very young. At the present time I am enjoying pastel painting, Ling Nan Style Chinese Watercolors, and graphite drawings.

My greatest artistic challenge is to create artful and accurate portraits as well as lovely landscapes. To me the greatest challenge in any art project is composition. Almost everything else is secondary.

The techniques of the old masters have guided my work for years. Several years ago I studied, part time, with Myron Barnstone. I would love to continue to explore the techniques that he taught, which correspond to the approach taken by the Old Masters Academy. …

Always learning!

Artwork by Carol Cyr

I am a wife, mom, grandmother, business owner, gardener and a sometimes artist. Art is a place where I can regroup and clear my head. There is nothing like getting in the mode where one is totally engrossed and that time ceases to exist. It doesn’t always happen, but wonderful when it does.

I am always eager to learn new techniques that I can apply to my art.

I didn’t think I was able to use color, but when I decided to make some time for myself and picked up my great grandfather’s pastels, I realized that maybe I could do this. And when I discovered the proper paper and tools it became clear that there was so much to be learned, and I was hooked. …

I want to learn the Old Master techniques

Artwork by Jenny Kyng

Growing up in a household where art materials were plentiful–thanks to my mother’s vocation as an artist/art teacher–I started drawing at the age of 2. I was lucky that my parents were somewhat bohemian and didn’t mind the mess. I’ve had a passion for all things art and creativity-related ever since. In this life, however we have time enough for only one obsession. As the ancient Chinese saying puts it: “if you try to chase 2 rabbits, you end up catching neither”. After flirting with both acting and writing in my youth, while still practicing art, I came to the point of having to choose. Art won out in the end.

Along the way, I’ve had to make a living. I was tired of being a starving artist. Being hungry is not so inspiring after all! I was directed into nursing when I was 25.

More recently I’ve become a counsellor and run art therapy groups which I really enjoy. …

I’ve had these cravings since birth. . . to draw, paint, sculpt, create

Artwork by Ronnie Caplan

I’ve had these cravings since birth.
To draw, paint, sculpt, create
This eventually led me to Parsons School of Design NYC, developing my crafts and honing my philosophy amongst the community of artists in The Village.

To pay for my passions, I landed as creative director at several ad agencies & publishing companies. I also advanced my ability to generate emotion by designing live environments as an event designer. …

I decided I would learn everything about painting to make the dream come true

Artwork by John S. Williams

In 2012 I was a welder and had an accident that left me with a TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). I started painting by number crafts and simple drawings until I was bored. One night I had a dream I was putting the finishing touches on a beautiful autumn woodland scenery with a buck and doe by a steam. That day I decided I would learn everything about painting and drawing I can to make that dream come true.

Fast forward 3 years 2015, I’m now painting in oil and mixed medium. I have been asked if I would sell my art work. I wasn’t sure.

Now fast forward to 2020, I began to learn the art of pastels in chalk and oils. I’m now working with water soluble oil paint. I’m finding it fun but slightly difficult. …

how-to-painting using the Flemish technique

Never too old to be what you were born to be!

Artwork by Vivian k Mosley

My art is changing, from simple pottery painting, my first painting using the Flemish technique, to painting subjects like bread (much harder than I could imagine) to portraits. I am not satisfied with a flower in a vase anymore, I want to capture the still life and draw the viewer in to discover details that were carefully put in to create the illusion that it is real. My first attempts were ok, but I am my worst critic and keep pushing to attain the goal I set for myself.

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso
Many times in my life Art has been my best therapy. You can start with anguish, or anger, or joy and find yourself working in a frenzy until your soul calms down, The dust, the dirt, the stress of life are forgotten and you lose yourself in the creative process. …

Art saved my life

Artwork by Isha Greene

Creating art saved me from falling into depression. …

To summarize – Art saved my life, my marriage and gave my children someone they could look up to for stepping out of my comfort zone and starting my art business (2019). A few pivots this past year, obviously, but my passion has remained firm. I have hundreds of started paintings and over a hundred finished paintings to one day open my own gallery/studio and help people going through their own struggles to find healing in art. My hope is that Old Masters Academy would train my skillset to take those unfinished paintings head-on and get them done in the more masterful way they deserve (I usually stopped because I felt out of my depth to complete them). …

Just Another Self-Taught Artist

Artwork by Hani Bordonada

… I do not have any connections to galleries and have never been exhibited as an artist but this has always been my dream. I take a bit of commissions here and there about three to fours times a year.

I want to win this competition so I can finally have some formal training and further master my craft, being self-taught can only take not too far from what I really want to achieve as an artist.

I truly believe winning this course will not only help me as an artist but also instill artistic discipline, patience and finding my artistic style/signature.This can also be a catalyst into finally being considered by local galleries and exhibits – at the end of the day, my dream has always been to be a full-time artist and winning this competition can boost up my art portfolio. …

I’m compelled to learn the techniques of the old masters

Artwork by Patricia Stine

… Art expresses life, love, humor, passion and frames the divine. It unveils the soul and reveals fresh perspectives. It is what I live for each day!

I’m compelled to learn the techniques of the old masters. I wish to refine my drawing, achieve harmony, new compositions, get the proportions correct the first time, and master the colors.

It’s the human figure that I’d like to perfect. To me, it’s the biggest challenge with the greatest rewards. The Old Masters Academy cultivates competent artists in these areas. So that’s my goal.

I’d like to integrate the life passion that I feel being a nomadic artist with a solid foundation in classical art. I’d like to share other worlds through my art with viewers and am better able to accomplish this through classical discipline which realistically, yet beautifully expresses thoughts and feelings so poetically. …

A Sixty Year Journey – I started drawing as a teenager

Artwork by Sharon Mick

… In 2013 my second husband and I moved to Hemet, CA. I am grateful for all of his support. On my 65th birthday I decided to become a certified instructor. I located an renown artist, Wilson Bickford and studied and received my certification from him.

Within a short time I stared conducting classes in the Colonial County Club recreation center and I have been actively pursuing my artistic efforts ever since.

The greatest gift for an artist is the beauty that surrounds us daily.

I have difficulties with color and values. I hope to someday learn the proper way to add value. I have always admired and respected Old Masters Academy for their material and professionalism.

I want to win this course so I can pass it on to a young inspiring artist who can’t afford to attend this fantastic academy. …
