… Not that I feel I can do the Divine justice, for to do so would entail perfection on my part and, being imperfect, that is a forlorn hope. However, I would like to learn much more that would make such imperfections less obvious. My art training comes largely from my mother and, ‘though a fine artist in her own right, she is perhaps not so well regarded as the Masters from Cimabue onwards. It is these – especially the hyper-realistic painters – whose techniques I yearn to master such as my meagre budget affords me, so that I, too, will become well regarded, so that I will attract the John Ruskins and the Charles Saatchis or even the Medicis who can offer me their patronage.

This is one of the beauties of the Old Masters Academy. Never before have I seen so comprehensive and easy-to-understand exposition of the techniques which have made the likes of Michelangelo, Leonardo, Constable, van Dyck et al so vivid and beloved centuries after their return to the Divine, and this is why I want – indeed, so badly need – to study on the course.

My goal is to become a master

Artwork by Cindi Neverdousky

… Ten years ago I stopped and took a breath, I retired. I didn’t retire totally but at least my calendar was mine and I could find time to paint. You see the only time my mind gears down from the problems of the day and the world is when I paint or sing. Using that right brain is what relaxes me and makes me a kinder, more gentle person.

I’ve taken lessons from a variety of teachers in our Woman’s Club and a local art association. When I look at the old masters and read of the limited palettes they use I am amazed at the colors and values they are able to achieve. I learn something new from each and every teacher. My goal is to find my style, my best color palette, and become a master at what I do.

As we grow older our lives change and so must we. I hope that the last 30 years or so will be a productive time of creating works of beauty for others to enjoy for years to come.

how-to-paint- love to learn from old masters

I would love to learn from old masters

Artwork by Wassim Touir

… I love art so much. I guess painting figures is really challenging also finding the right values and the perfect colors are a bit hard.
I would love to study art to become better and learn new techniques and master human figure and portraits so the best way for that is learning from old masters because they are the best and I really love to make a big effort to achieve my dreams. …

Quality of Art comes from the heart

Artwork by Jason McDermott

I would like to improve my skills to a much more realistic and figurative style of painting and drawing quality. I kind of started backwards in my Artistic interests and education growing up. In high school I was exposed to the Impressionists and Van Gogh along with a smattering of the Renaissance masters such as Da Vinci then in my portfolio preparation course for Art college stuff like ‘Shock of the New’ and modern Art which to put it politely wasn’t to my liking at all, things got even worse when I eventually did go to Art College, even though I was there to learn to be a Graphic Designer the only enjoyable part I remember from my first core year were the life drawing classes, the knowledge and techniques as thought here on the old masters academy are rapidly fading or all but gone from the local college level only to be replaced with conceptual and modern art, again I’ll hold my views lol! apologies if I’ve rambled. …

Learning oil painting after 35 years of photography

Artwork by Henk

I have been quite successful as a photographer, having published 6 books and having a gallery showing my work worldwide… But recently I really felt the urge to discover more.

So I joined a painting class that will take 5 years, 2 days a week. I’m still in the first months of my first year, discovering the basics of oil painting, of color theory, of how to create a painting. …

I’ve been looking at the Old Masters Academy website, and realising I still have a long and interesting way to go.

I am an ART enthusiast

Artwork by Ivana Kuhar

My name is Ivana and I am an ART enthusiast. I love all forms of art although painting and drawing are my absolute favourites. I LOVE it so I do it, simple as that. I can do it for hours at a time, without even realising that the whole day just flew by.

At a certain POINT in the process, I let go of visual reference and let my memory and feelings take over.

I want to paint all beauty around me.

I’m an entirely self-taught artist

Artwork by Jeff Vehige

My name is Jeff, and I’m a 45-year-old stay-at-home dad of four kids. I gave up an academic career for my kids, and now that the oldest is off to college and the youngest is eleven, it’s time that I start thinking about my “second” career. I want that to be art.

…Over the past two years of painting, my artistic interests have evolved. At first, I thought I’d be a happy landscape painter. But now I know I want to tell stories with my paintings, and that means mastering the human face and figure. When I look at the history of art, the greatest figures painters were the Old Masters and all the contemporary artists who follow in their footsteps. That’s the road I want to travel.

I think the Old Masters Academy is a perfect opportunity for learning the “secrets” of the greatest painters who ever lived. I don’t know how far I will go in art, but I want to go as far as I can, to be able to paint whatever I want — or whatever any client wants. That’s I want to win the Old Masters Academy course for that very reason — to begin the journey to becoming a contemporary artist and bring much-needed beauty into this world. …

how-to-paint-Old-Masters-I was born with a gift for art

Lifelong art interrupted

Artwork by Maria Wegorzewski Grotek

Art was gifted to me when I was born. I have been drawing since age 4 – I was never able to continue my art classes because I could not afford them.

I have been creating art over the last 50 odd years on and off – some I entered into competitions and won some I sold to friends some I just kept.

I have picked up bits and pieces of instruction but life obligations prevented me from mastering techniques that I wanted to use to create my work. …

The Power of Paint

Artwork by Wayne Lucina

I live in a small town in New Jersey U.S.A. I am 55 years old and I have been painting for about 5 years.
I work every day and fit painting in whenever I can. I wish I could do it full time.

… As I attempt to improve I find my challenges include, perspective, proportion, color mixing and shading. I would like to learn how to do these and other techniques more confidently in my attempts to improve.

The Old Masters Academy course is very exciting and quite comprehensive in its scope. I am a member of the Drawing Academy and I find that course indispensable.
