I am 75 years old and have been interested in creating great art for most of my life. I was very interested in drawing and painting all the way thru high school and the first two years of college, but as with most people who have a passion – but not an overwhelming desire to follow that passion – life got in the way. I got married, had a daughter, had to make a living and provide for my family. I went to law school and after graduating and passing the bar I went to work as a Deputy District Attorney. As a child I loved to draw and paint, rushing home from school to watch The John Nagy Learn to Draw show. On Saturdays I attended a children’s class at the Vancouver School of Art but then, in my teens, my confidence eroded.

I have always been self-critical but I was also joined by an art teacher who did not encourage my efforts, telling me not to proceed in his “field”. I dropped it all, just like that. Over time, I would take a drawing class or a painting class and my enthusiasm would soar . . . and then land again. There seemed to be no purpose for my work. …

I am a retired physicist. However, I have been drawing and painting since I was very young. At the present time I am enjoying pastel painting, Ling Nan Style Chinese Watercolors, and graphite drawings.

My greatest artistic challenge is to create artful and accurate portraits as well as lovely landscapes. To me the greatest challenge in any art project is composition. Almost everything else is secondary.

Go for oil – might be the right time for me

I was painting since I was a child, with crayons, watercolors, pencils and everything else. With 14 I tried to enroll at artschool, but they refused me. So I turned away from drawing and painting for about 10 years.

Then I startet again and taught myself and learned from books and magazins. Watercolors and acrylics on canvas were and are my favourite materials, some attempts I made with digital painting on a drawing tablet, but it is not like painting with brushes and real colours.
