Relearning of oil painting

Artwork by P K Logan

I have degrees in fine art and graphic design, and have worked professionally as a designer my whole adult life. I’m semi-retired now and am starting to re-explore my first love of figure painting.

Art in all forms is my whole life – everything I do and think about revolves around my of love of art.

My challenges are the relearning of oil painting and overcoming those feelings of inadequacy from not being able to paint proficiently at this point.

how-to-paint-like-Old Masters Academy review

Amazing course! Old Masters Academy review by Pauline

Old Masters Academy course student

A year ago I began studying this wonderful course. I read and listened over and over again all the art lessons and art history. I was overwhelmed by all the information and precision of the art lessons. So much to learn and practice. Let me tell you, I was pretty scared. I had a lot of work ahead of me, but I enjoyed it so much.

Even if I’m retired, I am a very busy lady. I took my time and went through nearly all of the lessons and did the exercises. My goal was to paint a portrait in the style of the 16th century.

… A happy member and student of the Old Masters Academy.

I returned to drawing and painting

… I’ve been following the Old Master Academy videos and newsletters and I’m fascinated by the idea of applying old techniques to new materials and very inspired by the level skill executed in these works.

In addition, Old Master Academy offers me the opportunity to learn art anywhere while my ex-pat lifestyle means that I have to move every few years. Life abroad means constant change and transition and I rarely have the opportunity to have a consistent art teacher in many of the places I live. This is a win-win for me!

how-to-paint-Great Grandfather an Old Master

A Tribute to my Great Grandfather, an Old Master of the Philippines

Artwork by Miguel Peralta

Ramon Peralta was a well known oil painter in Philippines and also my great grandfather. During the 19th century, he reigned in the art industry a long with artists such as Juan Luna (painter of spoliarium) and Fernando Amonsolo. They learned their oil painting techniques and competed in art competitions within Europe.

Being told this story growing up, it lead me to a path of artistry. From when I was young till now, I have been exposed to many different art mediums. I enjoyed graphic design, painting, sculpting, drawing, makeup artistry and even the performing arts. Though I have tried a variety of ventures, there is still a fire in me towards oil painting.

…I want to be able to share the word one day about the wonders of your Art Academy. I lack the knowledge on the old Masters techniques and I wish to help contribute bringing it back. Although paintings are a great way to make a mark in history, I believe education is really the true way to keep an art alive.

It is very rare that I spend a day without drawing

Artwork by Francisco Bordon

I’m 59 years old and I live on an island in Gran Canaria, I’m an art lover, art for me is the way to communicate, here are not many opportunities to study good art.

I always had a pencil in my hand, it is very rare that I spend a day without drawing, I always go out with a blog, a pencil and a pen and as soon as I have time I draw a picture.

I spent part of my childhood drawing on my own, I didn’t have an art teacher at the time, later I was in an academy where classical realism wasn’t studied. I have developed my painting skills on my own. …

I now have time to paint

Paintings by Sandra Bellestri

Medium, that is. Throughout my 64 years not only was I asked that question by almost everyone I know but I had to ask myself as well.
I’d love to think I’m fairly good at everything I’ve tried. Pottery, Acrylics, Watercolors, Sculpting, Fabric Manipulation, Colored Pencil. Oil Painting, however, still confounds me and also keeps me interested. I consider it a science actually.

I broke my arm last week but consider myself lucky in 2 ways. I broke my non dominant arm and I now have time to paint. I’m also finally choosing my medium of choice. Oils! I only hope no one pressures me to narrow down a subject matter. I enjoy painting Humans but I’m having a blast trying to paint seascapes at the moment. …

A whole new world ahead where NOTHING is impossible Drawings by Ryan Spring

A whole new world ahead where NOTHING is impossible

Drawings by Ryan P. Spring

I’ve been an artist all my life, however I was at a loss in high school when we were told to pick a career and I said I wanted to be a world famous artist…where did da Vinci turn in his job application?

Dejected I lost 15 years of life in a bottle and had a long road to recovery and now I’m sober and my mind has been opened to a whole new world ahead where NOTHING is impossible.

I’ve been self employed as an artist for the past 2 years with the time being spent mostly on teaching myself oil painting and struggling to learn the business of sales which has been nearly nonexistent.

I learned that the oldest methods of oil painting involved glazing and this is where I’ve been unable to ‘get it’ and wish I was financially able to receive some instruction.

Drawing and art subjects became my relief from the stress of home life Lee Anchor

Drawing and art subjects at school became my relief from the stress of home life

Artwork by Lee Anchor

I was born and raised in Hong Kong. Growing up in Hong Kong, my family and I experienced hardship, where work and income were important for the family’s survival and basic needs of food and accommodation.

To help the family, every day after school, I did part-time work and quite often finished at 8-9pm. I was 12 years old when I started working. This affected my attendance and performance at school and my education became secondary to ensure my younger brothers had enough food to eat.

Notwithstanding my poor education, I began to realise my natural talent for drawing and design when my teachers regularly used my school work to demonstrate to other students. Drawing and art subjects at school became my relief from the stress of home life. It became my outlet when I was upset or had no one to turn to. Because of my poor up-bringing, I was not able to develop my skills and passions. …
