I am 72 years old and know it’s never too late to learn. I have been drawing and painting most of my life so art plays a major roll, especially now that I am retired. I am mostly self-taught.

In the 70’s I was fortunate to be living in Manhattan and I attended Art Students League taking drawing and painting classes for a few months. …As someone who has never had a single art lesson, I appreciate that the opportunity to have guidance from an academy professional could make all the difference. Learning by trial and error over the years is a slow and laborious process with varying levels of success and failure.

I can only hope that those of you that truly have a love of art, will vote for me as we all share such dreams. I just want to be the best version of me that I can ( as an artist ). For me classical art and the achievement of such a standard is the ultimate dream. A vote for me is a vote for yourselves – as we would be sharing the journey.

Recently retiring from a career as a pharmacist, my lifelong dream has been to pursue a professional master artist career. I was juried into membership with the Oil Painters of America and I know that I have the ability but I have not been able to fill in the gaps of my learning.

After watching the demos for the Old Masters Academy, I am convinced this course will provide the elements I have been pursuing to become a more accomplished artist.

I am predominantly self-taught which is reflected in my paintings and I now know what I am lacking. As experienced by Natalie, I am frustrated with the techniques taught by the “Masters of today” who clearly don’t appreciate the fine intricacies of color theory as she described. I learned how little I know and how much I can gain in these seven demo videos than I have been able to amass in all the workshops and books I have read. …

I have loved art since I could walk, and throughout the years it has always taken a back burner. Until now.

Of course some may say its too late at 56 to try and become a “master” but I believe that all things are mind over matter.

I constantly challenge myself, and also try to help others. Money has been a reward at times, but really the reward is more spiritual to me, to conquer my fears, and press in. I do a lot of work with elderly people to keep there brain muscle moving creatively, but I’m afraid it barely pays the gas and supplies.

Without art, life is hell

I am self taught and started painting in 1999. Recently, after a visit to Vienna, I became intrigued and a bit obsessed by skin tone… and realised that it was the art of glazing that captured my imagination.
The Old Masters captured this so well and are a constant inspiration.

So, for a couple of years, this is what I have been doing, or shall I say attempting to do..art is my therapy, my best friend, my only..every day.

My name is Luan Ricardo Friant, I am a self-taught student. I’ve been drawing for about 4 years and I’ve been painting for 3 years.
